The MindfulWriting Project (TMWP):
Overwhelming experiences change our entire body, which includes our brain, impairing our innate capacity for enjoyment, engagement, self-control, and trust.
Fortunately, wellbeing is a skill we can learn and practice. When we skillfully place difficult memories and emotions into words, when we do this without judgement, and when we practice this repeatedly, enjoyment, engagement, self-contol, and trust is written back into existence.
MindfulWriting helps us remember that an inner-peace and vibrant aliveness are not "things” derived from the outside, but are instead our natural states, who we already are, inside.
The MindfulWriting Project is a 501 C(3) non-profit dedicated to developing and providing a free-of-charge therapeutic writing program that
- is based on many key teachings and practices from the world’s great contemplative (first-person inquiry) traditions (e.g Gnosticism and Mysticism, Sufism, Kabala, Advaita Vedanta, Dzogchen and Zen, and Stoicism);
- finds support from key research and findings in diverse fields and disciplines, such as the Brain, Mind, and Psychological Sciences, including the important disciplines of Narrative Medicine, Cognitive Humanities, and Medical Humanities;
- and, most importantly, is tailored to the unique needs of the military service-member and veteran, and other similar demographic.
From effort and experience, through trial and error, we build our identity over the course of a lifetime. "Fire Exiting" is the heartbreaking story of how this most cherished creation can be shattered by experience.
"Fire Exiting" is also a Clarion Call for genuine concern and compassion: No one should suffer alone, or in silence. Instead, we can learn how to place the past into written words, and in this externalized and symbolic place and form, "what has already happened" can be more easily embraced, processed, and transformed.
